Transforming Antwerp

In 1989, the city of Antwerp embarked on an ambitious journey towards transforming itself into a modern metropolis with a people-centred approach to urban development. The Globaal Structuurplan, or Global Structure Plan, set forth a comprehensive framework for guiding Antwerp’s evolution until 2019. As a professional city planner who has witnessed firsthand the changes brought about by this far-reaching strategy, I want to share my reflections on its achievements and legacy.
